So let’s visit the other side of the musical spectrum…
How about some heavy metal?
Not just any heavy metal, but the ultimate combination:
metal and cello. What could be better?
Silence…
Open your ears to a sound you have probably never heard
(unless you are like me and look for it).
The artist is Primitivity,
and the song is “Revival”.
Primitivity, Apocalyptica and Cello Fury (whose music I will
share in the future) have decided to go where very few would ever dare on the
cello…I consider them the patriarchs of cello metal and rock. And they have
invented what is now probably my absolute favorite music.
Primitivity takes the classic heavy metal sound, and
completely reinvents it. Their instruments? Three cellos and a percussionist. That’s
it. If I hadn’t told you before you heard it, you’d probably swear there was at
least one electric guitar. Nope. They distort the sound using similar (if not
the same) kind of gadgets an electric guitar would use.
Fifty years ago, this style on this instrument would have been
unheard of. And probably completely unimaginable.
Now embark the new sound of cello metal…
The beginning is very mellow; we hear a developing melody with
counterpoint, and a corresponding harmony. It reminds me of wandering through a
woodland, pondering vague, sorrowful memories. The trail is bumpy and unclear, but
the shadows are strong and defined. The intensity slowly builds as you discover
the pathway before you is actually paving the right direction for you as you
go, and the memories are becoming more and more vibrant until—
A fire ignites!
The heavy metal riffs attack. You suddenly start running. You’re
struck with a burning motivation to press on, determined to make it out of this
meandering forest—to surmount the pain of the past, and begin the new journey
to the future. There is a light at the end, and you are going to grab it. You
run faster.
